What is good mental health?

What is good mental health?

Firstly, what do we mean by mental health? We hear these words on a daily basis but yet do we really understand what they mean?

Mental health is our psychological, emotional and social health combined. Our mental health affects the way in which we think, feel, act, react and respond to situations. It can also determine how we handle and manage stress, daily challenges, big life changes and how we make our decisions. This is from a young age and throughout adulthood!

Looking after our mental health or having good mental health is important to our progress and daily life. If something is off-balance, then we may need support in helping us become more balanced.

Good mental health is categorised by several key functions that play a part in our daily lives:

  • Our ability to learn
  • Our ability to self-regulate and express our emotions both positive and negative
  • Our ability to maintain and form relationships and connections with others
  • Our ability to cope and navigate change and uncertainty.
  • So what can support us in creating good mental health within our lives?

There are several things that we can do that help to increase our mental health and well-being:

Talk about our feelings – yes I know how this may come across and sound but when we talk about what is going on for us and how we feel, it can really help us. The phrase “a problem shared is a problem halved” – there’s a reason we have this, because when we talk, we share and when we share, it can help relieve stress and anxiety. I doesn’t mean you necessarily have to speak to close family, it could be a close friend or co-worker or counsellor, someone that you trust. It’s also ok to ask for help when needed.

Keeping active and eating well – having a healthy lifestyle really boosts of well-being and mental health. Exercise relieves stress, improves memory, helps you sleep better, and boosts your overall mood. Our brains function best when we eat a nutritious and balanced diet helping to reduce stress and anxiety levels and boosts our moods!

Taking a break

Sometimes we need to take a break from our normal routine, take time out or off work. It doesn’t mean you have to go on holiday, although you can if you want! You could just take an hour off your daily work schedule or go and visit friends and family!
